High Yaki, London: Japanese BBQ in the Heart of Chinatown
Looking for a spot in London where you can grill premium cuts of beef at your table and also enjoy top-tier sushi and sashimi? Let me introduce you to High Yaki, a Japanese BBQ restaurant tucked right in the centre of Chinatown.
This place caught my attention because of its mix of interactivity, quality food, and casual atmosphere and after visiting, I can say itโs definitely worth a try.
Experience
You can make a reservation online, but they usually have space for walk-ins as well. However, if you’re visiting for a special occasion or during peak times, Iโd recommend booking ahead.
Once youโre at your table, everything is ordered via tablet. Itโs a simple, stress-free way to browse the menu and place your order at your own paceโespecially if you prefer to take your time or want to avoid the pressure of waitstaff hovering.
The vibe is laid-back, and the staff are genuinely friendly, always happy to explain how the BBQ works if it’s your first time.
Grilling at the Table
The highlight of High Yaki is definitely the tabletop grilling experience. You get your own built-in grill and a platter of raw, premium meats ready to cook.

We ordered the 9-Kinds Beef BBQ Platter (ยฃ45.80), which included a range of cuts like short rib, brisket, and even ox tongue. Each cut offered something different, some were buttery and rich, others leaner with a satisfying bite. It was fun experimenting with the different textures and flavours, and the house dipping sauces really added depth.
More Than Just BBQ
While the meat platter is the star of the show, we also tried a few side dishes and sushi to round things out:

- Spicy Salmon with Cucumber (8 pieces) โ ยฃ8.90 Light, fresh, and with just enough heat to keep things interesting.
- Soft Shell Crab Tempura Roll (5 pieces) โ ยฃ16.80 Crisp tempura shell, creamy interior, definitely one of the favourites at the table.
- Pork Gyoza (4 pieces) โ ยฃ6.80 Nicely pan-fried with a juicy, flavourful filling.
- Sashimi 3-Kind Platter โ ยฃ20.80 Salmon, bluefin tuna, and yellowtail, fresh and beautifully presented.
How Much Does It Cost?
Expect to spend around ยฃ30 per person, depending on how much you order. The beef platter is priced for sharing, so it works out nicely if you’re dining with someone. For central London, especially given the quality of the meat and seafood, the value is solid.
Youโre getting a fun, interactive dining experience and premium ingredients without an inflated price tag.
Final Thoughts
High Yaki is the kind of place that strikes a rare balance: quality food, good pricing, easy ordering, and a central location. Whether youโre into Japanese BBQ, sushi or sashimi, itโs a spot worth saving on your list.
