Master Congee: A Must Try Comforting Breakfast Experience in Hong Kong
If youโre in Hong Kong and craving a warm, comforting bowl of congee, Master Congee is a spot you wonโt want to miss. Known for their silky-smooth congee and freshly made fried dough sticks, this place is a local favourite. However, be prepared to wait โ the line can get long, but trust me, itโs worth it!
Experience
Our visit to Master Congee started with a 30-minute wait โ a common sight for popular eateries in Hong Kong. Like many traditional Chinese restaurants, the service here is fast-paced and efficient, with the main focus being on getting customers in and out quickly. A useful tip: many places in Hong Kong, including Master Congee, donโt provide tissues, so bring your own if needed.
Food
The food was absolutely delicious. Every dish was fresh, flavourful, and comforting.

- Congee: The preserved egg porridge/congee was my personal favourite. The century egg was incredibly smooth and blended perfectly with the flavoursome, velvety congee. Itโs the kind of dish that feels like a warm hug.
- Rice Rolls: The beef rice noodle rolls were silky and soft, making each bite incredibly satisfying. For something extra indulgent, try the fried Chinese bread wrapped in a rice noodle roll โ itโs the perfect combination of crispy and chewy textures.
- Fried Dough Stick (Youtiao): Freshly made, this fried dough stick was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, making it the perfect accompaniment to the congee.
- Sesame Bread: A simple but tasty addition to the meal, great for those who enjoy a mild nutty flavour.
Price
Master Congee is super affordable, making it a great spot for a budget-friendly and satisfying meal. Hereโs a breakdown of some of the prices:
- Chinese fried bread stick โ $12HKD / $2.35 AUD
- Cooked preserved egg porridge/congee โ $31HKD / $6 AUD

Final Thoughts

Master Congee truly delivers on its reputation. The congee is smooth and comforting, the fried dough stick is fresh and crispy, and the rice rolls are silky and soft โ everything youโd want from a classic Hong Kong breakfast. While the wait can be long and service minimal, the food makes up for it. If youโre in the Tsim Sha Tsui area, this spot is definitely worth checking out and it is affordable.
