Man Man Unagi Singapore: A Must-Try for Eel Lovers

If youโ€™re a fan of Japanese unagi (eel), then Man Man Unagi in Singapore should be on your must-visit list. Known for its freshly grilled eel, smoky flavours, and authentic Hitsumabushi experience, this restaurant has built a strong reputation among food lovers. While it used to be notorious for its long queues, I was lucky to grab a seat when it just opened its doors at 6PM. With an open-kitchen concept, live eel tanks, and a signature grilling technique, Man Man Unagi is unique and each dish mainly focuses on Japanese unagi (eel). Is it worth the price? Hereโ€™s my take on the interior, food, experience, and cost!

Man Man provides a cozy and immersive setting. One of the first things youโ€™ll notice is the eel tank display, where live eels are kept before being expertly prepared. The option to sit in front of the grill was my highlight and I enjoyed watching the chefs in actionโ€”seeing the eel cooked over an open flame adds to the authenticity of the experience. The restaurantโ€™s ambiance is warm and inviting, making it a great place for both solo diners and groups looking to enjoy a quality Japanese meal.

Food

Man Man Unagiโ€™s grilled eel is the star of the show, and it truly lives up to the hype. The skin is crispy and slightly charred, while the inside remains tender, and packed with rich, smoky flavours. One of their most popular dishes is the specialty Hitsumabushi ($35 SGD / $39 AUD)โ€”a traditional Nagoya-style unagi dish that comes with pickles, spring onions, seaweed, wasabi, and broth. You can enjoy the eel in three ways:

  1. On its own to appreciate the pure, smoky flavour.
  2. Mixed with the condiments for an added layer of taste.
  3. Combined with the broth for a warm, comforting finish.

Each bite is packed with umami flavours, making it one of the best unagi experiences in Singapore. Honestly, itโ€™s the best unagi, Iโ€™ve had ever unless I find one in Japan that beats this!

Experience

Ordering is done via an app, which streamlines the process, and both cash and card payments are accepted. The option to sit by the grill enhances the dining experience, allowing you to witness the precise grilling techniques used to achieve that perfect balance of crispy skin and juicy meat. The service is smooth, and the overall atmosphere feels authentic, lively, and engaging.

Price

Dining at Man Man Unagi falls into the mid-to-premium price range, with an average spend of $30 – $50 SGD ($33 – $56 AUD) per person. While itโ€™s pricier than a typical Japanese meal, the freshness, quality, and traditional grilling techniques justify the cost. If youโ€™re looking for a premium unagi experience without flying to Japan, this is definitely worth the price.

Final Thoughts

If youโ€™re craving fresh, authentic, and expertly grilled unagi, Man Man Unagi is a must-visit in Singapore. The combination of high-quality ingredients, traditional preparation methods, and an engaging dining experience makes it stand out from other Japanese restaurants. While itโ€™s on the pricier side, the flavours, freshness, and craftsmanship make it a worthwhile indulgence.
