All’Antico Vinaio Rome Italy: Iconic Tuscan Sandwiches Near the Pantheon

Tucked near the Pantheon, All’Antico Vinaio is one of those food spots you hear about long before you set foot in Rome. Known for its giant, flavour-packed Tuscan sandwiches and the lines that snake down the street.

All’Antico Vinaio started in Florence as a small, family-run sandwich shop. Over time, it became a local legend, winning over hearts with its schiacciata bread and generous fillings.

As word spread, so did the business with branches popping up in Milan, Rome, and beyond. I finally tried it for the first time at the Rome location, and it’s clear why the hype hasn’t slowed down.

Experience

I waited about an hour before getting to order, so either arrive early or come prepared to stand and soak in the atmosphere.

Once inside, the process is refreshingly quick. You can choose from their signature menu or build your own from an impressive spread of meats, cheeses, and flavourful spreads. In just a few minutes, you’re holding a warm, perfectly wrapped sandwich.

There’s no indoor seating, so you can take your sandwich and find a spot with the Pantheon in view.

Food

The bread is the first thing you notice: freshly baked Tuscan schiacciata, golden and crisp on the outside, cloud-soft inside. The fillings are generous, actually “generous” doesn’t quite cover it. These are boldly overstuffed sandwiches, with layers of silky prosciutto, creamy stracchino, tangy pecorino, truffle spreads and more.

Every bite is a masterclass in balance rich but not heavy, flavourful but not overpowering. One sandwich can easily feed two people since the portion size is massive.

Price

Most sandwiches range from €1–10. In the heart of Rome, that’s rare enough, but when you factor in the quality and size, if feels like you’re getting your moneys worth.

Final Thoughts

If waiting in line isn’t your thing, you might be tempted to skip this spot. But if you’ve got the patience, the feed is absolutely worth it, not just for the taste, but for the value and the experience.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning fan chasing your favourite flavours, it’s an experience worth slotting into your itinerary.
