Alka Malta: The Ultimate Seafood Spot by the Sea
If you’re looking for a charming, tranquil dining experience in Malta with front-row ocean views and fresh seafood, Alka should definitely be on your list. Tucked away in Il-Qrendi and just a short drive from the famous Blue Grotto, this spot is more than just a restaurant, it’s an escape from the buzz, where waves accompany your meal.

Experience
From the moment we arrived, Alka delivered a calming, coastal vibe. Dining outside is a must if the weather allows, it truly amplifies the experience. The ocean breeze, the gentle crash of waves, and the minimalist coastal decor set the tone for a laid-back, intimate lunch.

One of the most unique aspects was how they presented the menu. Instead of printed sheets, the staff brought over a large chalkboard to each table, which gave the whole ordering process a personal and rustic feel. The staff spoke some English, making communication and ordering smooth and easy.
Food
We were served complimentary bread with olive oil and olives, a perfect way to settle in.
We started with their soup special, Roville (¢15). It was a rich seafood broth topped with scampi and, no exaggeration, probably the best seafood soup I’ve ever had. I’d go back just for that.

Next, we shared the Mixed Fish Special (¢51). It included four grilled local fish—two each—served with roasted potatoes and grilled eggplant. The portion was generous, and the fish was perfectly cooked, fresh, and flavourful. Between the two of us, we were absolutely full by the end.
Note, like most places in Europe, still water isn’t free. Expect to pay around ¢4.50 for a bottle.
Price
Expect to spend around ¢30 to ¢35 per person, which is reasonable considering the quality of the food, the generous portions, and the atmosphere. The experience feels more high-end than the price tag, especially with dishes like the Roville soup and fresh-caught fish.
Final Thoughts
Alka isn’t just about food, it’s about the experience. The oceanfront setting, chalkboard menu, and warm service create an atmosphere that’s both cozy and memorable. Its location near the Blue Grotto also makes it a perfect stop for a scenic lunch after exploring Malta’s natural beauty. If you’re in the area and craving seafood with a view, Alka deserves a visit.
