Chun Café Amsterdam: Is the Asian Fusion Toast and Matcha Worth the Hype?

Amsterdam is home to countless canals, historic architecture and, increasingly, a café scene that rivals some of the world’s trendiest food capitals. One café in particular has been taking over my travel and foodie feed in Amsterdam. Chun Café, a minimalist, matcha-loving hotspot located in the trendy Nine Streets district. Known for its beautifully layered lattes, fluffy Japanese-style egg toast and savoury bulgogi toasts, Chun has quickly become one of the places to try when in Amsterdam. But with long queues and social media hype, is it worth the wait?

This blog takes you through my full experience visiting Chun Café, from first impressions and what to expect on arrival, to a detailed review of the food, drinks, pricing and tips to make the most out of your trip. Whether you’re a matcha enthusiast, a brunch hunter or simply curious about Amsterdam’s café culture, this review will help you decide if Chun deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Background About Chun Café

Located at Berenstraat 8 in the heart of Amsterdam’s historic canal district, Chun Café blends effortlessly into the stylish streetscape of boutique stores and artisanal shops. The area, known as De 9 Straatjes (The Nine Streets), is popular for its mix of fashion, design and food destinations. Chun fits right in with a sleek, modern interior that reflects minimalist Japanese and Korean influences, neutral tones, natural wood, soft lighting and clean lines.

Opened with a focus on modern Asian fusion brunch, Chun built its reputation around Instagrammable toast creations layered with fluffy eggs, tender meat toppings and balanced sauces. It also quickly became a go-to spot for matcha lovers.

Open daily from 10 am–6 pm, Chun is positioned perfectly for brunch, lunch or an early afternoon snack. The café is not large, and while its atmosphere is calm and giving zen vibes, seating is limited, which unfortunately contributes to the notoriously long line outside.

What is the Experience like at Chun Café?

We arrived around 12:30pm, which in hindsight, may not have been the best time. A long line had already formed down the street, a clear sign of Chun’s popularity. Based on those ahead of us and the pace at which tables were turning over, it looked like a 30–60 minute wait just to be seated. Given the hunger levels and our desire to explore the area without spending an hour in line, we made the decision to order takeaway instead.

The takeaway option turned out to be way quicker. While dine-in customers queued outside, takeaway customers were able to walk straight in, place an order at the counter and receive it within a short wait time. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind eating on a nearby bench or by the canal, this is a great option.

Once inside, we caught a glimpse of the dining area. The design was calming and contemporary, almost spa-like in atmosphere, with a muted palette and minimalist decor. However, seating was limited, which is probably why the wait times were so long.

Overall, while the queue could be off-putting for some, it also speaks to Chun’s popularity and the demand for what they offer. If you’re intent on dining in for the full experience, I recommend that you arrive early. But if you’re happy to enjoy your food outdoors, takeaway is the smart move.

What is the Food like at Chun Café?

Garlic Shrimp Egg Toast (€13.50)

This was the standout dish. The first thing you notice is the height of the toast, thick-cut Japanese bread, soft yet structured enough to hold the toppings. The sweet Japanese omelette was light, fluffy and slightly custardy, pairing well with the five-spice marinated garlic shrimp. The shrimp added a savoury depth and a gentle kick of umami that balanced the subtle sweetness of the egg. Every bite felt indulgent yet surprisingly light. It’s easy to see why this item is one of their most popular, it’s unique and satisfying without being too heavy.

Ribeye Bulgogi Toast (€14.50)

For those craving something heartier, the ribeye bulgogi toast is the way to go. The sweet-marinated beef was tender and flavourful, with just the right amount of richness. The soft boiled egg and mild spicy sauce added a silky texture and a touch of heat that elevated the entire dish. Compared to the shrimp toast, this is definitely the bolder, more robust option. It’s a dish that will keep you full and makes for a comforting meal, perfect for cooler Amsterdam days or if you’re especially hungry.

Matcha Strawberry Iced Latte (€6.90)

Visually stunning with its layered presentation, this drink is a clear social media favourite. Flavour-wise, however, it leaned heavily on the strawberry syrup, which somewhat overpowered the matcha. It was pleasant and sweet but if you’re a purist or someone who prefers strong matcha flavour, this might not be your best pick. Instead, consider ordering the classic iced matcha latte. But if you enjoy fruity flavours and something a little playful, this drink is still enjoyable and refreshing.

What is the Price like at Chun Café?

Chun Café falls within the €10 – €20 price range per dish. For a meal and drink, you’re looking at spending around €15 – €25, which aligns with most trendy brunch spots in central Amsterdam.

Final Thoughts

Chun Café’s food is thoughtfully prepared, visually appealing and delicious. The signature egg toast dishes are a unique fusion that sets Chun apart from other cafés in Amsterdam. The drinks are Instagram-worthy and enjoyable, especially for those who appreciate creative flavours.

However, the experience is undeniably affected by the long wait times and limited seating. If you’re someone who values ambiance and dining in, be prepared to arrive early or wait. For those willing to grab takeaway, the process is much quicker and still enjoyable, especially given the scenic streets surrounding the café.

Would I recommend Chun Café? Absolutely, but with realistic expectations. It’s a spot for people who appreciate culinary creativity, don’t mind paying a little extra for quality, and are willing to navigate the queues.
