Mdina: Explore Malta’s Enchanting Silent City – Travel Guide
Let me take you to one of the most enchanting places I’ve visited in Malta – Mdina, Malta’s so-called Silent City. It’s a place that doesn’t just feel old… it feels timeless. With its golden stone walls, winding alleys, and peaceful quiet (like, eerily quiet in the best way), Mdina felt like stepping into a movie set—and actually, part of it was! If you’re a Game of Thrones fan like me, you’ll be excited to know this is where King’s Landing came to life in season one.
Why You Should Visit Mdina
Mdina is a place that feels almost otherworldly. Once the capital of Malta, it has been continuously inhabited for over 4,000 years. The city’s baroque architecture, medieval walls, and labyrinthine alleys are nothing short of mesmerizing.
Fun fact: parts of season one of Game of Thrones were filmed here—most notably the iconic Mdina Gate, which served as the entrance to King’s Landing!
If you’re into history, architecture, photography, or just want a break from the more touristy parts of Malta, Mdina is 100% worth a spot on your itinerary.

How to Get There
Mdina is located in central Malta and is easily accessible:
- By Bus: From Valletta or Sliema, it takes around 45 minutes. Public transport is affordable.
- By Car/Taxi/Uber/Bolt: A quicker option—just 20 minutes from Valletta/Sliema, depending on traffic.
- Tour Option: If you want a seamless experience and to visit more landmarks along the way, consider booking a guided tour:
My Experience
I visited Mdina in August, and the weather was warm, sunny, and perfect for exploring. Walking through the narrow cobbled streets felt like stepping back in time. The silence, combined with the golden stone buildings and flowering balconies, created an almost dreamlike atmosphere.

I went early in the morning to beat the crowds and had the Mdina Gate practically to myself—highly recommend! And of course, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo at the famous Blue Mdina Door, framed with vibrant pink and purple blooms.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Mdina is during spring (April–June) or early fall (September–October) when the weather is still warm but more comfortable than the high heat of summer. If you don’t mind the sun, August (when I visited) is still very enjoyable—just start your days early and bring plenty of water!
Travel Tips
- Go early in the day: Mdina gets busier as the day goes on, especially with tour groups.
- Wear comfortable shoes: The cobblestone streets are beautiful but can be hard on your feet.
- Bring a hat and water if you’re visiting in summer—there’s limited shade.
- Explore the side alleys: That’s where you’ll find the charm (and some great photo ops!).
- Eat nearby: Try the cafes just outside the city gate or within—some have views of the countryside! Definitely recommend Is Serkin – Crystal Palace Bar for their affordable Pastizzi (only costs ¢0.50!) Read more about it in my blog post HERE

Highlights
- Mdina Gate: Iconic filming location and the perfect spot to start your journey.
- Blue Mdina Door: A must for photography lovers—seriously picturesque.
- St. Paul’s Cathedral: Stunning interior and a central landmark.
- Bastion Square: Offers breathtaking panoramic views over Malta.
- Silent Streets: Just wander and soak up the atmosphere—every corner has a story.
Final Thoughts
Mdina is a peaceful, almost spiritual place that invites you to slow down, look closer, and appreciate history in its purest form. Whether you’re geeking out over GoT filming spots or just want a quiet morning/afternoon surrounded by centuries-old stone walls and endless charm, Mdina will steal your heart.
If you’re visiting Malta and want to escape the busier beaches or cities for a bit, Mdina is the perfect place. Whether you’re tracing the steps of knights or recalling Game of Thrones scenes, Mdina promises a journey that stays with you long after you leave.
