Ultimate Travel Guide to Fira, Santorini: What to Do, Eat, Stay, and Top Tips

When you think of Santorini, chances are you picture those iconic white buildings, dramatic cliffs, and sunsets that make you want to stop everything and stare. And right in the middle of all this beauty is Fira, the islandโ€™s buzzing capital. Located up high above the caldera, Firaโ€™s got that perfect balance of breathtaking views, vibrant local culture, and a relaxed energy that makes it the perfect home base for exploring Santorini.

Why Visit Fira?

While places like Oia steal the spotlight in Instagram feeds, Fira delivers the full Santorini experience, minus the tourist crowds like Oia. Think: world-class views, cozy tavernas tucked into alleys, lively squares, and museums that dive deep into the islandโ€™s fascinating volcanic past. Fira has an authentic vibe, especially in the quieter morning and evening hours. You get all the charm with just a bit more breathing room.

How to Get There

Fira is incredibly accessible, whether youโ€™re flying into Santorini (Thira) Airport or arriving by ferry.

  • From the airport, it’s about a 15-minute taxi or bus ride.
  • From the Athinios Ferry Port, expect a 20โ€“30 minute trip by car or shuttle, winding up the dramatic cliffside road.
  • Public buses run regularly to and from other towns on the island, making Fira an ideal transportation hub. The bus schedule can be found on the Santorini bus website.

Best Time to Visit

  • Late April to early June or September to mid-October are sweet spots: fewer crowds, mild temperatures, and better hotel deals.
  • July and August bring the heat and the crowds, expect packed streets and higher prices.
  • Winter is quiet but many businesses close for the season.

What to Do in Fira, Santorini

Fira is more than just a pretty town with a view, itโ€™s a place that has a blend of history, adventure, relaxation, and culture. Whether you’re a first-timer or a returning traveler, here’s what to do in Fira to make the most of your time:

Wander and Shop

Fira’s cobbled alleyways are packed with boutique shops, artisan jewellery stores, and local art galleries. From handcrafted sandals to Cycladic-inspired ceramics, it’s easy to find unique souvenirs here. Donโ€™t miss the chance to pick up some volcanic skincare products or local wine which makes for great gifts or personal treats.

TIP: Tax-Free Shopping: If you spend over โ‚ฌ50 in a single store, you may be eligible to claim a VAT refund when leaving the EU. I was able to process mine at Santorini Airport, youโ€™ll find the counter after security, inside the duty-free shopping area before the gates. Just make sure to ask the store for a tax-free form and have your passport (or at least a photo of it) handy when making the purchase. I didnโ€™t have my physical passport with me, but they accepted a clear photo, which made the process much easier (in store).

Watch the Sunset

While Oia gets all the hype, the sunset in Fira is just as magical, minus the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. One of the best spots to catch it, is right in front of the Metropolitan Church of the Presentation of the Lord, where youโ€™ll have stunning views of the golden sky melting into the caldera.

If youโ€™re dining at Kaliya Reimagined Food & Drinks, try to sit at the front tables near the entrance, youโ€™ll get some of the best sunset views in town with your meal.

Hike from Fira to Oia

Start your 10-km hike right from Fira and follow the cliffside path all the way to Oia. Itโ€™s one of the most scenic walks youโ€™ll ever do. The trail winds through Firostefani and Imerovigli, with stunning Aegean views the entire way and plenty of spots to stop for a quick photo (or ten).

Definitely wear good shoes (the path is rocky in parts), and head out early to avoid the midday heat. Donโ€™t forget to bring water, youโ€™ll need it, especially in the summer.

When we walked from Fira to Imerovigli, we actually stumbled across a couple of locals along the way selling handmade souvenirs and even fruit.

Ride the Cable Car to the Old Port

One of Firaโ€™s most iconic and scenic experiences is hopping on the cable car down to the Old Port (Skala). The ride only takes a few minutes, but the views? Unreal. Youโ€™ll glide down the cliffside with panoramic vistas of the caldera, whitewashed buildings above, and deep blue sea below. Itโ€™s a little bit thrilling, a little bit peaceful, and definitely camera-worthy. The ride is about 3-5 minutes long.

There are no online options to purchase the tickets, so you’d need to buy them at the venue.

Once you arrive at the bottom, the Old Port has its own kind of charm. It’s quieter than the busy town above, and youโ€™ll find a handful of tavernas right on the water, perfect for grabbing a drink or a quick seafood lunch while watching boats drift in and out. There are also little shops selling souvenirs, local snacks, and even tickets for boat tours to the volcano, hot springs, or Thirassia island.

If you’re arriving by cruise ship, this is hands-down the easiest and fastest way to get from the port up to Fira. The alternative? A steep 500-step climb, which might be scenic but not so fun in the heat or with luggage.

Tip: Unless youโ€™re feeling super adventurous (and ready for a leg workout), take the cable car back up too. The other option is the famous donkey path but walking it can be slippery, and riding the donkeys is controversial due to ongoing animal welfare concerns. Stick with the cable car, itโ€™s easy, affordable, and has some of the best views on the island.

Visit the Museum

Museum of Prehistoric Thera โ€“ If youโ€™re even a little bit curious about Santoriniโ€™s ancient past, this museum is 100% worth a visit. It houses incredible artefacts from Akrotiri, the ancient city that was frozen in time by a volcanic eruption (basically, Santoriniโ€™s version of Pompeii). Youโ€™ll see wall paintings, pottery, and everyday items that give you a real sense of what life was like thousands of years ago. Even if youโ€™re not a huge history buff, itโ€™s genuinely fascinating. Tickets are ยข10.

Itโ€™s lively, but not overwhelming, and it gives you the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
