Try Local Finnish Cuisine: Experience the Flavour of Reindeer in Lapland
During my time in Lapland, Finland, I was immersed in the culture, traditions, and, of course, the local cuisine. One of the biggest surprises was when I saw reindeer featured on the menu of a local restaurant. At first, I was taken aback after all, seeing reindeer on a menu felt unusual for someone from a culture where we’re accustomed to eating more common meats like beef or chicken. But as I soon discovered, reindeer is a traditional Finnish dish and a staple in the Lapland region.
At first glance, I was unsure of what to expect from a dish made of reindeer meat. Would it be gamey? Tough? Or perhaps too wild for my taste? I hesitated, but my curiosity got the best of me.

Sautéed reindeer (called Poronkäristys in Finnish) is a beloved dish that is often referred to as the “soul of Finnish Lapland cuisine.” It consists of thinly sliced reindeer meat that is sautéed. The dish is served with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, and pickled vegetables.
The lingonberry jam adds a burst of sweetness and acidity that perfectly complements the richness of the meat, balancing the flavors beautifully. The mashed potatoes are the perfect comforting base to soak up the savory sauce, making this dish the ultimate winter comfort food.
The overall reindeer dish kind of reminded me of kebab meat—tender, juicy, and rich, with just the right amount of seasoning.
Sautéed reindeer can be found throughout Lapland, with many restaurants across Ivalo, Rovaniemi, Saariselkä, and other Lapland towns offering this local delicacy. Whether it’s a rustic local inn or a fine dining establishment, many places in the region serve this traditional dish.

If you find yourself in Lapland, I highly recommend giving reindeer a try. It’s a true Finnish delicacy that connects you to the land and its people, and it’s an unforgettable part of the local culinary journey. Don’t be afraid to step outside your culinary comfort zone—you never know what delicious surprises await!
