Sudu Malaysian Eatery in London: A Taste of Malaysia in Queen’s Park

There’s something comforting about Malaysian cuisine. So when I heard about Sudu Malaysian Eatery in Queen’s Park, London, I had to visit. What I discovered was a cosy, welcoming eatery showcasing its own interpretation of Malaysian favourites.

Background about Sudu Malaysian Eatery

Sudu Malaysian Eatery shares ownership with the much-loved Satay House, a London spot for Malaysian dining. While Satay House leans a little more traditional, Sudu feels like the modern younger sibling, laid back, casual and firmly rooted in the local community feel of Queen’s Park.

You can practically step off the platform at Queen’s Park Station and straight into Sudu’s front door. It’s incredibly convenient but admittedly a bit of a trek if you’re coming from central London which is about 30 minutes travel from Soho.

Inside, the atmosphere is intentionally relaxed. No loud music, just simple décor, casual seating, and an easy-going vibe. I also learned from staff that they’ve recently opened a speakeasy bar downstairs operating on Friday and Saturday nights, an exciting addition that suggests Sudu is quietly expanding into a late-night experience.

What is the experience like at Sudu Malaysian Eatery?

I arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to walk in without any reservation and still find a comfortable table. The staff were warmly attentive, happy to explain the menu and offer recommendations without any sense of rush or pressure. There were families, solo diners and couples, a good sign of a neighbourhood spot that attracts varied crowds.

Char Kway Teow (£17.50)

Char Kway Teow is a beloved Malaysian street food classic, flat rice noodles stir-fried over high heat with seafood, egg and soy. At Sudu, their version had prawns, squid, beansprouts and egg. The flavours were pleasant, slightly smoky, with a mild hint of spice at the end. However, it leaned more refined than rustic. Personally, I missed a bit of the signature char (that smoky wok hei intensity) and would have preferred more egg and prawns, as you might find in Asia. That said, Sudu’s take is enjoyable, just don’t expect a carbon copy of the Penang original. It’s their interpretation, and for some diners, that might be refreshing.

Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang (£17.50)

Nasi Lemak will always be my go to order. It was served with coconut rice, sambal, crispy anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and a protein of choice. I opted for beef rendang over fried chicken, as I lean toward curries. The rendang was tender with a gentle but noticeable kick of spice. Sambal had depth, slightly sweet, slightly fiery. What I loved most was the texture contrast, the crunch from the anchovies and peanuts against the creamy rice and tender beef. For anyone new to Malaysian cuisine, Sudu’s Nasi Lemak is a must-order introduction.

Roti Canai with Chicken Curry – £10.50

Roti Canai is all about flaky, buttery flatbread served with curry for dipping. Sudu has three curry options, chicken, fish or dhal. I chose chicken curry, a nostalgic favourite of mine. The roti itself was soft, slightly crisp at the edges, and absorbed the curry well. The chicken was tender, falling apart gently in the sauce. It’s a satisfying starter or side if you’re also ordering Nasi Lemak, as I did. Comforting, familiar and well-executed.

Syrup Limau (£4.50)

A drink that caught my eye was the Syrup Limau, a blend of pandan syrup and fresh lime. Seeing pandan on a menu in London is rare, so I had to try it. It was refreshing, citrus-forward, with pandan appearing only as a subtle aftertaste. I would’ve preferred a stronger pandan presence, but overall, it was a pleasant tropical palate cleanser.

What is the price like at Sudu Malaysian Eatery?

Sudu sits in that casual-but-considered price range, with most dishes around £10 to £20. Some might find the pricing a touch steep for street food staples, especially if you’re used to Southeast Asia’s original prices but in London terms, it’s the standard.

Final Thoughts

Sudu Malaysian Eatery isn’t trying to be a carbon copy of a Malaysian hawker stall. Instead, it offers a London interpretation of Malaysian food, familiar foundations with its own creative touches.

It’s a lovely neighbourhood gem, perfect for those who want to explore Malaysian cuisine without travelling into the more saturated central-London dining scene. If you find yourself near Queen’s Park or are curious enough to make the 30-minute trip, Sudu makes for a warm, flavour-filled stop.

And with the added intrigue of a speakeasy bar downstairs on weekends, it might just be worth an evening revisit too. Sudu Malaysian Eatery may not replicate every nuance of traditional Malaysian street food, but it carries the spirit, comfort, warmth and layered flavours.
