Mama Thor’s Tavern: A Seafood Stop with a View in Santorini
When in Greece, especially on the picturesque island of Santorini, indulging in fresh seafood is practically a rite of passage. On a recent visit, I found myself craving octopus and calamari, two Greek staples known for their freshness and flavour. That’s how I ended up at Mama Thor’s Tavern, a spot that not only delivered on taste but also offered one of the most scenic dining experiences.

Experience
Tucked along a cliffside with sweeping views of the ocean and the volcano, Mama Thor’s Tavern is a charming blend of traditional Greek ambiance and relaxed island vibes. You have the choice of sitting indoors or on the terrace, but the outdoor seating is where the magic really happens, think cool sea breeze, sunset skies, and a front-row view of the caldera. The staff were warm and welcoming, happily sharing the day’s fish specials, though I had my heart set on octopus and calamari.

Food
We ordered the Traditional Grilled Octopus (€24) and the Calamari (€20), accompanied by a bottle of water (€3). Both seafood dishes were impressively tender and grilled to perfection. The octopus had that perfect smoky-charred flavour on the outside while remaining soft on the inside, a balance that can be tricky to get right. The calamari was equally satisfying: not rubbery, just fresh and tender. Each plate came with a refreshing side of salad and soft potatoes, which paired beautifully with the seafood without overpowering it.

Price
For €47 in total, I felt the meal was well worth it, not only for the quality and freshness of the food but also for the whole experience and with the view. In a tourist-heavy spot like Santorini, this felt like a fair price for a scenic, satisfying seafood lunch.
Final Thoughts
Mama Thor’s Tavern ticked all the boxes: friendly service, a peaceful setting, and authentic flavours. It fulfilled my Greek seafood craving. If you’re looking to enjoy classic dishes like octopus and calamari while soaking in unforgettable views, this spot should definitely be on your list.
Santorini has no shortage of restaurants with ocean views, but few offer the perfect combination of simplicity, flavour, and charm that Mama Thor’s Tavern does.
