Koulourades Santorini: Discovering Irresistible Greek Bagels

When people think of Santorini, images of blue-domed churches and dramatic caldera views often take centre stage. But tucked away in the heart of Fira, there’s another gem that deserves the spotlight, Koulourades Santorini, a humble bakery serving up some of the best bagels (or koulouri) on the island. I love that it isn’t your typical bakery.

We actually stumbled upon this place randomly on Google Maps while wandering through Fira, just looking for a quick breakfast spot. What we found was far more than just a convenient bite, it turned out to be one of our favourite food stops in all of Santorini. The moment we stepped inside and caught the scent of warm bread and fresh coffee, we knew we were in for something amazing.

Experience

Stepping into Koulourades early in the morning is an experience in itself. The warm scent of freshly baked bread hits you immediately, a comforting embrace that feels like home. The interior is modest, with shelves lined with golden, sesame-crusted bagels and a display case featuring a variety of filled options—both savoury and sweet.

There’s a rhythm to the place. Locals stop by for a quick bite before work, while travellers like us linger a little longer, drawn in by the charm and the anticipation of trying something new.

It’s not flashy or overdone, it’s simple, authentic, and full of flavour. And in a place like Santorini, where fine dining and sunset views often take centre stage, Koulourades offers something refreshingly real and down-to-earth.

Food

We tried a few different items, and each one impressed in its own way. The cheese and bacon bagel was served warm which I love that it was (most places don’t keep it warm). The outer layer had a slight crispness from the oven, while inside, the melted cheese and salty bacon created a rich, savoury bite. The contrast between textures, the crunch of bacon and the softness of the dough was deeply satisfying.

Next up was the chocolate bagel, and I’ll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. Would it be too sweet? Too dry? It was neither. The chocolate was just right, balanced and rich without being overwhelming, with a subtly sweet dough that made it feel indulgent but not heavy. On the top, it had a layer of sesame which was a nice touch.

To wash it down, we ordered a flat white, and it did not disappoint. The coffee was strong and smooth just what we needed to kickstart our day of exploring. Greece might not be globally known for its coffee culture, but spots like Koulourades show that it’s definitely something worth noting.

Our second visit was even better. This time, we went for their thin sesame bagel (¢1.80), a traditional Greek-style koulouri. Light, flavourful, and topped with a generous coating of toasted sesame seeds, it was absolutely perfect. Sometimes the simplest items are the hardest to get right, but they nailed it. If there’s one item you have to try here, it’s this.

Price and Final Thoughts

One of the biggest surprises? The affordability. For a cheese and bacon bagel, a chocolate bagel, and a strong flat white, we paid just €8. In a tourist-heavy area like Fira, that’s rare. It’s comforting to find a place that delivers both high quality and great value, a rare combination these days.

But price aside, what truly sets Koulourades apart is the consistency. Every item felt carefully made, as if they genuinely cared about what they were serving. It wasn’t just food, it was a little piece of Greek culinary tradition, served with pride and warmth.

If you’re planning a trip to Santorini, make room in your itinerary (and your stomach) for Koulourades in Fira. Whether you’re in the mood for a warm, cheesy bagel, a not-too-sweet chocolate treat, or just a killer cup of coffee, this place delivers.

And trust me, once you’ve had a bite of their sesame bagel, you might just find yourself coming back again before you leave the island. Just like we did.
