Kaunta Singapore: A Hidden Sushi Gem in Singapore

Tucked away in the Onze building, Kaunta Singapore is an intimate 20-seater omakase restaurant that sushi lovers should not miss. Known for its Lunch Kaiser Don and premium omakase experience, this spot is an authentic Japanese dining spot with high-quality sashimi and fresh ingredients. Lunch is strictly walk-in only, while omakase requires reservations, making it an exclusive and highly sought-after destination. Given the hype, I had to check it outโ€”hereโ€™s my breakdown of the interior, food, experience, and price!

Interior

The restaurant is small yet intimate, with only 20 seats, creating a cozy and authentic Japanese dining atmosphere. The setting is minimalistic and focuses on high-quality sashimi. The sushi counter setup enhances the experience, as you can watch the chefs meticulously craft each dish. Despite being tucked away in Onze building, the restaurant has built a strong reputation, attracting both locals and visitors looking for an unforgettable sushi experience.

Food

The Lunch Kaiser Don is the highlight here, offering a two-in-one meal that starts with a classic sashimi rice bowl and transforms into a comforting soup-based dish toward the end. The three variations available are:

  • Ume ($19.90 SGD) โ€“ Sushi rice topped with 10 types of sashimi, including uni, ikura, and a side of aged hamachi sashimi.
  • Hana ($29.90 SGD) โ€“ Similar to Ume but with the addition of kani (crab meat).
  • Tokujo ($39.90 SGD) โ€“ A premium version with extra uni, ikura, kani, and the aged hamachi sashimi side.

Since I wasnโ€™t sure when Iโ€™d be back in Singapore, I went all out and ordered the Tokujo. Each bite of the sashimi was incredibly fresh, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the rice was perfectly seasoned. However, I wished that there was more uni considering it says there is extra uni.

Transforming the dish into a warm soup at the end added another layer of comfort, making it a truly unique dining experience.

Experience

One major thing to note is the wait time for lunchโ€”I had to wait about an hour to get a seat. Lunch is walk-in only, so if you plan to visit, be prepared for a queue. When I arrived at 11:50AM, there was already a long queue so I definitely recommend arriving early. However, the experience of watching the chefs expertly prepare each dish made the wait worthwhile.

For those looking for a more relaxed and exclusive dining experience, Kauntaโ€™s omakase dinner (reservation required) is a great alternative. With limited seating and personalized service, it offers a refined, high-end sushi experience that is perfect for special occasions.

Price

With an average spend of $20 – $40 SGD ($22 – $44 AUD) per person, Kaunta Singapore falls into the mid-tier price range. The high-quality sashimi, and unique dining experience make it worth the price. The Tokujo at $39.90 SGD was definitely on the higher end, but the extra uni, ikura, and kani made it a worthwhile splurge. If youโ€™re looking for a more affordable yet still satisfying option, the Ume ($19.90 SGD) offers excellent value.

Final Thoughts

Whether youโ€™re opting for the Lunch Kaiser Don or the omakase dinner, youโ€™re in for a memorable Japanese dining experience in Singapore.
