Husky Safari in Lapland, Finland: A Thrilling Arctic Adventure
A husky safari ride in Lapland is an exhilarating and unforgettable experience! It’s one of the most popular winter activities, offering the perfect mix of adventure, nature, and the joy of interacting with energetic huskies.
On this ride, you’ll glide through snowy trails, forests, and frozen lakes on a sled pulled by a team of Siberian or Alaskan huskies. You can choose to sit back and relax as a guide leads the way or take the reins yourself for a thrilling hands-on experience. If you opt to drive the sled, the guides will provide a short training session on handling, controlling speed, and communicating with the dogs.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by enthusiastic, friendly huskies, eager to run. Many tours include time to meet, pet, and learn about these incredible dogs. The safari typically lasts between one to three hours, depending on the package. Along the way, you’ll stop for photos and take in the breathtaking Arctic scenery.
After the ride, we warmed up by a cozy campfire, sipping traditional warm berry juice while the guides shared fascinating stories about Lapland’s culture, huskies, and life in the Arctic. Husky rides are available throughout Lapland, Finland. I experienced mine at the Northern Lights Village in Saariselkä, where the process was seamless and incredibly fun. Tips
- Wear a balaclava and sunglasses/goggles – Protect your face from the cold wind and your eyes from the bright snow glare.
- Layer up! – Lapland’s temperatures can be extreme, so wear thermal layers under your clothing. Most tour operators provide thermal suits, boots, and gloves to keep you warm.
- Book in advance – Husky safaris are popular and can sell out quickly, especially in peak winter months.
- Check the weather forecast – Extreme conditions may affect the ride. Some safaris might be more enjoyable on clear, calm days.
- Bring a GoPro or camera with a strap – You’ll want to capture the stunning scenery, but make sure it’s securely attached so you don’t lose it on the ride!
