Gustavo Monopoli: Best Affordable Sandwich Spot in Puglia
There’s something about travelling through small coastal towns in Italy that makes you crave good, simple food. Not the over-the-top, dressed-up-for-Instagram kind but real food that hits the spot without trying too hard. That’s exactly what you get at Gustavo, a low-key sandwich shop right near the water in Monopoli.

It might not look like much from the outside, but this little spot has gained a reputation among people who know what’s good. If you’re visiting Monopoli and want something quick, delicious, and super satisfying, this is the place.
Experience
Gustavo is a takeaway-style shop, so don’t expect seating or service. You order at the counter, and they make everything fresh on the spot, which means you may have to wait a few minutes, especially if there’s a small line. You watch them slice the ingredients and build your sandwich right in front of you.

Right outside, there are a few spots nearby where you can sit and eat, but for a better spot, I’d recommend walking just a few minutes down to the Porto Antico. It’s a beautiful little harbour area where boats are docked, and there’s space to sit by the water and take in the view. Eating an incredible sandwich with that view? Hard to beat.
Food
I ordered the Mortadella Bologna, Burrata Pugliese, Pesto e Granella di Pistacchio sandwich (€7.50), and let me just say: this was my favourite sandwich during my time in Puglia!

The mortadella was sliced whisper-thin, which gave it that melt-in-your-mouth texture. I chose focaccia as the bread option, and it was fresh, soft, and held everything together perfectly without being too heavy. The burrata added that creamy, dreamy layer, while the pesto brought in that herby richness you want in every bite.
And the sprinkle of crushed pistachios? Just enough crunch and a hint of nutty sweetness.
It’s a pretty big sandwich too. I split it and still felt full. For less than €8, this was probably the best value meal I had in Puglia.
Price
Prices range from around €5 to €10, depending on what you order. Considering the quality of ingredients, the size of the sandwich, and the fact that it’s freshly made right in front of you, it’s an amazing deal. It’s the kind of lunch that makes you feel like you just got away with something, in the best way.
Final Thoughts
Gustavo is casual, welcoming, and genuinely good. Thoughtfully made sandwiches that taste way better than you’d expect from such a simple setup.
If you’re the kind of traveller who loves finding local gems, Gustavo should be at the top of your Monopoli food list.
