Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum: A First-Time Visitor’s Guided Tour

My Experience

Our guide shared vivid stories about the many events held there from brutal gladiatorial combats and animal hunts to the astonishing mock naval battles. I also learned that while it’s commonly believed that early Christians were thrown to the lions here, historians debate how often that actually happened in the Colosseum itself. Nonetheless, the persecution of Christians during Roman times is a powerful part of its history. Another surprising fact was that gladiators were often slaves, prisoners of war, or servants far from the glamorous fighters portrayed in movies. Their lives were harsh, dangerous, and far from easy.

It’s wild to think that such a beautiful and iconic place was once the scene of so much violence and spectacle, yet today it stands as one of the world’s greatest tourist attractions.

Palatine Hill provides sweeping views over the Roman Forum and was fascinating to explore, especially knowing it’s considered the mythical birthplace of Rome. Walking its ancient grounds, I could feel the layers of history beneath my feet.

Finally, the Roman Forum felt like stepping into the heart of a once-thriving city, full of temples, arches, and public spaces that served as the political, religious, and social centre of the Roman Empire. Imagining the debates, ceremonies, and daily life that took place there thousands of years ago was incredible.

By the end of the tour, I realised how much having a guide enriched the experience. Without one, these ruins would be beautiful yet mysterious.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and Fall (September–October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months.
I visited in June, and it was pleasantly warm, with a breeze that made walking comfortable. July and August tend to be far hotter.
Early mornings are best for photography and avoiding the midday heat.

Travel Tips

Wear comfortable shoes – there’s a lot of walking over uneven ground.
