A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Porto
If you’re wandering through Porto and craving a meal that feels truly local, add Casa Expresso to your list. Tucked away on Praça de Carlos Alberto, this spot isn’t flashy or touristy, it’s where you go when you want the real deal: authentic, homemade Portuguese food that tastes like someone’s grandma made it.
We found out about Casa Expresso on Google maps randomly, and after eating there, I totally get the hype. It’s walk-in only, and yes, you’ll almost definitely need to wait in line. We showed up around dinner time and waited about 30–45 minutes, but honestly? I’d do it again.
The Experience: Loud, Local, and So Worth It
There’s no sign of sleek interiors or curated Instagram vibes here, just packed tables, a buzzing atmosphere, and the smell of something seriously good cooking.
Inside, it’s a little chaotic in the best way possible. People are laughing, shouting across tables, clinking glasses, it feels like a family reunion, even if you don’t know anyone. The staff was friendly despite how busy it was, and they moved fast to get everyone seated and fed.
It’s the kind of place where you might not know exactly what you’re ordering, but you’ll trust the process, and be so glad you did.
The Food: Surprising, Comforting, and Full of Flavour
Here’s the thing about Casa Expresso: some of the food doesn’t look particularly pretty, but don’t let that fool you. Everything we ordered was packed with flavour and felt like a warm hug in a bowl (or on a plate).
Here’s what we tried:
- Papas de Sarrabulho (€2.60) This was hands down one of the most surprising dishes of the night. It’s made with shredded meats, pig’s blood, bread, and spices and yeah, it doesn’t exactly look appetizing. But it’s so rich, comforting, and flavourful. If you’re feeling adventurous, try this.
- Expresso Steak (€16.00) A solid, satisfying steak served with their signature sauce, a fried egg, pickles, and fries. The kind of dish that hits the spot when you’re hungry and craving something hearty.
- Alheira – Portuguese Sausage (€8.50) This was probably my favorite dish. It’s a grilled sausage made from a mix of meats and bread, and it was packed with flavour. Served with rice, fries, and another egg (because Portuguese food doesn’t mess around). Absolutely delicious.
- Sandes Rojao (€4.00) A giant pork sandwich and I mean giant. The meat was tender and flavourful, and the portion was so big we could’ve easily shared it. Great if you want something quick and filling.
The Price: Budget-Friendly, Big Portions
One of the best parts? The food is super affordable. You can easily eat here for around €5–€10 per person, which is wild considering how much food you get. Even the steak at €16 felt like a great deal for the size and quality.
Final Thoughts: Authentic, Affordable, and Totally Memorable
Casa Expresso isn’t fancy, and that’s exactly why I loved it. The vibe is unpretentious and welcoming, and the food tastes like it’s been passed down through generations.
Yes, you might need to wait in line, but trust me, it’s 100% worth it. Come hungry, try something new, and don’t judge the food by how it looks. This is the kind of meal that sticks with you, in the best way.
