Background About Bacalhau Porto

Bacalhau sits in a prime location at Muro dos Bacalhoeiros 154, 4050-080 Porto, a picturesque area overlooking the water. Its name, quite fittingly, translates to “codfish,” which is a staple of Portuguese cuisine and a specialty here. The restaurant maintains a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, with seating options both indoors and outdoors. For those who appreciate outdoor dining with an ocean view, securing a table outside is highly recommended.

Bacalhau Porto is open daily from 12 pm to 10 pm, making it accessible for lunch, early dinner, or a late snack after exploring Porto. Prices range from €10 to €30 on average, making it a fairly affordable option who want a taste of authentic Portuguese flavours.

What is the Experience like at Bacalhau Porto?

From the moment I stepped inside Bacalhau, the atmosphere was both lively and relaxing. I had just returned from a scenic boat ride around Porto, and I was ready for a meal that could complement the stunning views of the city from the river.

Luckily, I managed to secure a table outdoors with a direct view of the ocean. While it is technically a walkway, the slight activity around it didn’t distract from the experience. Sitting there, soaking in the late afternoon sun while waiting for my food, I felt completely at ease.

The staff were friendly and attentive, making the visit even more enjoyable. Early on, they brought out bread with olives and olive oil. Initially, I assumed it was complimentary, as is often the case in Portuguese restaurants, but I later learned it was added to the bill for €2.50. Even so, the bread was fresh, the olives nicely marinated, and the oil had that robust, fruity flavour that paired beautifully with both so I didn’t mind too much.

Seating at Bacalhau is somewhat limited, both indoors and outdoors, so I would recommend making a reservation if you’re visiting with a larger group. On my visit, walking in alone worked perfectly, but the space could easily fill up during peak hours. Overall, the combination of friendly service, relaxed environment, and scenic views made this one of my favourite dinner spots in Porto.

What is the Food like at Bacalhau Porto?

Bacalhau is best known for its codfish, and it did not disappoint. To start, I ordered Codfish Skin Crackers (€7.50), which came served with a creamy mayonnaise. The crackers were delightfully crispy and packed a burst of codfish flavour, making for a perfect appetiser to start.

For the main course, I tried the signature dish, Bacalao Con Bacalao Dorado (€18.50). This dish was a true highlight of the meal. The codfish itself was tender and perfectly cooked, while the layered potatoes underneath were crispy on the outside and soft inside. The dish also featured onions that added a subtle sweetness, and a rich egg yolk sauce that tied all the ingredients together beautifully.

To complement the meal, I also ordered a refreshing Ice Tea (€2.50). Sipping the cool drink under the afternoon sun while enjoying the ocean view. It’s small details like this that elevate a meal from simply good to truly memorable.

What is the Price like at Bacalhau Porto?

One of the things I appreciated about Bacalhau is its reasonable pricing. Appetisers range around €7–€10, main dishes typically fall between €15–€20, and beverages are around €2–€3. Considering the quality of ingredients, the skill in preparation, and the overall dining experience, the price feels fair and accessible. Even the bread and olives I initially thought were complimentary were a small, worthwhile addition at €2.50. For a restaurant with ocean views and high-quality seafood, Bacalhau strikes a nice balance between value and experience.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Bacalhau is an experience that combines great food, stunning views, and a welcoming atmosphere. The codfish dishes are undoubtedly the highlight, but the ambiance, friendly service, and location elevate the overall experience.

If you are traveling solo, with a partner, or in a small group, Bacalhau provides a memorable slice of Portuguese dining that’s hard to forget.

If your Porto itinerary includes a desire for authentic seafood and a scenic meal, make Bacalhau a priority. From crispy codfish skin crackers to the indulgent Bacalao Con Bacalao Dorado, every dish feels thoughtfully prepared and deliciously satisfying.

Just remember to plan ahead or be prepared to wait if you want an outdoor table with a waterfront view, it’s worth it.
