My Experience Visiting in Autumn

I visited Scotney Castle in mid-October. The air was crisp (so definitely bring warm layers!), and the entire estate was bathed in warm amber tones. As I walked down the pathway towards the castle, I actually gasped, the reflection of the ruins in the still moat was almost too perfect, like a painting come to life.

The estate is large but inviting, with charming goblin waymarkers dotted around the paths, an adorable touch that makes it great for kids. I wandered through woodland trails carpeted in leaves, then made my way into the Victorian mansion, where time seems to have paused in the 1950s. The rooms still hold family photos, antique furniture, and personal items from the last residents, Betty and Christopher Hussey. It felt like visiting someone’s home, intimate and real.

What surprised me most was how peaceful it was. Even with visitors around, the estate is so spacious that you can always find a quiet spot to sit and soak in the atmosphere.

How to Get To Scotney Castle

By Car – If you’re driving, Scotney Castle is an easy day trip from London about 1 hour and 15 minutes depending on traffic. There’s free parking available right at the front of the estate, making it a convenient option if you prefer the flexibility of your own vehicle.
By Public Transport – You can also reach Scotney Castle by train followed by a short taxi or Uber ride:
- Train: Around 45 minutes from London Bridge or London Waterloo to Tunbridge Wells
- Taxi/Uber: Approximately 20 minutes from Tunbridge Wells station to Scotney Castle

My experience

Since I didn’t drive, I took the train and then used a taxi/Uber to reach Scotney Castle. I booked my ticket on Trainline (cost £22 for an open return ticket) and traveled from London Waterloo to Tunbridge Wells, which took about 45 minutes. From there, I ordered an Uber straight to Scotney Castle, it took around 20 minutes and cost £25.

Heads up: Getting back was a bit of an adventure. Because the area is quite rural, there weren’t many Ubers available on the return journey. I ended up calling a couple of local taxi companies. One quoted £35, which felt too high, but TW Express Taxi company offered £27 and accepted card payment, so I happily booked with them.
