Sophie’s Soho: A Fire-Roasted Sunday Roast Experience in the Heart of London
Tucked away in the bustling heart of Soho, Sophie’s has carved a name for itself with its theatrical open-fire cooking and unapologetically bold Sunday roasts. With its striking fire pit and wood-smoked aromas wafting through the space, the restaurant promises an experience — but does it deliver more than just flames and flair?
The Experience: Warm Ambience, Fiery Centrepiece
Sophie’s is split into two distinct sections: a cozy, fire-side dining room where meats roast dramatically over a firepit fueled by English oak and birch, and a more laid-back bar-style space that offers a different vibe altogether. The firepit is, without a doubt, the main event — a must-see and a strong visual anchor that makes you feel like you’re in for something primal and special.

The staff were welcoming and helpful, striking a good balance between attentiveness and giving space. When asked for recommendations, our waiter didn’t hesitate to champion the lamb — and we’re glad they did.
The Food: Sunday Roast
We tried two of the Sunday roasts — the pork belly (£26) and the lamb with mint chimichurri (£34) — both served with all the traditional sides: roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal veg, and plenty of gravy.

Pork Belly
Initially, the pork belly felt like it might disappoint — the knife struggled to get through the thick top layer, raising early concerns. But it quickly redeemed itself. Once you bite in, the texture is spot on — a beautiful contrast of softness and satisfying crunch. The meat underneath was juicy and well-rendered, with plenty of flavour that paired effortlessly with the classic apple sauce.
A surprise bonus: an extra shard of pork crackling came on the side — perfectly cooked with that dreamy combo of crisp, airy crunch and just a hint of chew. It was a thoughtful touch that elevated the dish. While the pork belly didn’t quite hit the high notes the lamb managed, it held its own and felt worth the experience.
Lamb with Mint Chimichurri
This was hands-down the winner of the afternoon. The lamb was tender, juicy, and far from the overly gamey cuts you sometimes get. Cooked medium-rare with a rosy centre, it melted in the mouth. The mint chimichurri added a zesty, herbaceous lift that made every bite feel fresh and balanced. It was a smart, modern twist on a traditional roast — and one we’d come back for.
Final Thoughts
Sophie’s Soho is a visually captivating dining experience, with a real sense of theatre in its fire pit and oak-wood cooking style. If you’re after a smoky, dramatic twist on a Sunday roast and don’t mind paying a little extra for the atmosphere, Sophie’s Soho is a worthy contender. This is a place where the lamb shines, the fire is the spectacle, and the experience counts as much as the plate.
