Sunset by Ammoudi, Santorini: A Dining Experience at the Edge of the Aegean Sea
Tucked away in the picturesque Ammoudi Bay, just below the iconic whitewashed cliffs of Oía, Sunset by Ammoudi offers an unforgettable dining experience right on the edge of the water. Known not just for their fresh seafood but also for their iconic display of octopus hanging at the entrance, the restaurant captures the essence of Greek island life from the very first moment you arrive.

Experience
We arrived early, around 11am, and while the kitchen wasn’t open yet (food service begins at 12pm), we were still able to grab a table right at the water’s edge and enjoy a relaxed drink while waiting. To our surprise, despite not having a reservation, we were lucky enough to secure one of the best seats in the house, front row to the calming blue waters of the Aegean.

Sitting with a drink in hand, gentle waves lapping just a few feet away, and octopus hanging in the sun nearby (a classic Ammoudi Bay touch), the atmosphere was serene yet vibrant. It’s moments like these that define a holiday in Greece.
Food
Once the kitchen opened, we dove into their seafood-forward menu, which is a must when dining by the bay. Here’s what we tried:

- Grilled Octopus (€20.90) Beautifully charred and presented, the octopus had a rich, smoky flavor. While delicious, I personally wished the meat was just a touch more tender.
- Sea Bream Ceviche (€32) A standout! With a zesty mix of spicy tomato vinaigrette, chili, coriander, lime, cucumber, and spring onions, this dish was as refreshing as it was bold. The sea bream was exceptionally prepared, light, citrusy, and full of flavour. I’d absolutely order this again.
- Linguine with Seafood (€33.90) This was the star of the show. Packed with mussels, calamari, shrimp, and fresh tomato, the pasta soaked up every bit of that rich seafood essence. Surprisingly, even though it wasn’t creamy in appearance, it had a luxurious, creamy finish that made every bite a delight.
Every dish was presented beautifully and clearly prepared with care, showcasing the best of Greek seafood cuisine.
Price
Dining at Ammoudi Bay isn’t budget-friendly, but it’s worth every cent for the experience and quality of the food. Expect to spend around €40–€50 per person, depending on what you order. While you could keep costs low with a salad (€15), the real value lies in indulging in the fresh seafood offerings that this spot is known for. The ceviche and seafood linguine are absolute must-tries.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Sunset by Ammoudi is more than just a meal, it’s an experience that combines breathtaking views, fresh flavours, and the charm of Santorini’s coastal lifestyle. Whether you’re starting your day with a quiet drink by the bay or enjoying a full seafood feast as the sun dips below the horizon, this spot delivers a truly memorable experience.
Next time you find yourself in Oía, skip the hilltop crowds and head down to Ammoudi Bay. Just be sure to come hungry and ideally, without too tight a budget.
